Ombudsman Joins Festival of Popular Resistance and Book Launch Promoting Collective Memory and Human Rights

Dili, 11 July 2025 – The Ombudsman for Human Rights and Justice, Virgílio da Silva Guterres “Lamukan”, participated in a seminar organized as part of the Festival of Popular Resistance Culture (FKRP) 2025, which also featured the launch of two commemorative books: “Meraih Cahaya: Memori Kolektif Timor-Leste Pasca-Konflik” and “Jejak-Jejak Ingatan: Mengenang Masa Lalu, Mencintai Masa Depan”. The event was held at the Conference Hall of Centro Nacional Chega! Public Institute (CNC I.P), located at the historic site of the former Comarca Prison in Balide.

This joint seminar and book launch marked the 8th anniversary of the establishment of Centro Nacional Chega! I.P (2017–2025), celebrated under the theme “Collective Memory: A Path to Reconciliation.”

During the event, the Provedor received a Certificate of Appreciation from CNC I.P. in recognition of his contribution to the promotion of human rights and justice. Following the presentation, he shared his reflections on the significance of the two books, praising their role in preserving national memory and reinforcing the values of justice, truth, and reconciliation.

The event was officially opened by the Vice Minister for Parliamentary Affairs, Aderito Hugo da Costa, who represented the Prime Minister and the Minister of the Presidency of the Council of Ministers. He highlighted the significance of preserving Timor-Leste’s historical memory as an essential component of reconciliation and national unity.

The two books launched at the event add depth to Timor-Leste’s post-conflict narrative:

  • “Meraih Cahaya: Memori Kolektif Timor-Leste Pasca-Konflik” – presents a collection of stories and reflections that capture how Timorese society continues to engage with the memory of past conflict, drawing strength and identity from shared historical experiences.
  • “Jejak-Jejak Ingatan: Mengenang Masa Lalu, Mencintai Masa Depan” is an anthology that reflects on past suffering and resistance, while also emphasizing the importance of remembering history to build a future based on peace, love, and justice.

Both publications aim to preserve national memory and serve as educational tools to inspire the younger generation to value truth, justice, and human dignity.

The Festival of Popular Resistance Culture continues to serve as a national platform to reflect on Timor-Leste’s struggle for independence, while promoting civic awareness, social justice, and the protection of human rights for future generations.
