Baucau, 19 august 2026 — The Provedór for Human Rights and Justice (PDHJ), through its Baucau Territoriál Delegation, conducted a community awareness session in Uai-Laha Village, Venilale Administrative Post, Baucau Municipality, aimed at strengthening community understanding of PDHJ’s mandate and role, human rights principles, good governance, and procedures for submitting complaints to the institution.
The session, facilitated by Director Elsa do Rosario Viegas da Costa and her team, brought together 40 community members, including 17 men and 23 women, as well as the Village Chief and community representatives. The representative of the Venilale Administrative Post Administrator encouraged participants to share the knowledge gained with their families, neighbours and wider community, stressing that greater awareness can help communities recognise and respond appropriately to potential human rights and good governance concerns.
Village Chief Rafael Guterres said the community had been mobilised to participate in the session and expressed hope that those who attended would pass the information on to residents who were unable to participate. The session combined presentations with an open question-and-answer discussion and interactive activities, enabling participants to clarify issues and engage directly with the PDHJ team. The approach helped strengthen participants’ understanding of human rights, good governance and the mechanisms available to seek assistance or submit complaints to the PDHJ.
