Deputy Ombudsman Applauds Successful Culinary Training for Female Prisoners at Gleno Prison

Gleno, August 2, 2024 – Deputy Ombudsman for Human Rights, Maria Marilia da Costa, lauded Haktanek Direitu Sidadaun (HDS) for the successful completion of a month-long culinary training program for female prisoners at Gleno Prison.

In her speech at the closing event, Deputy Ombudswoman Marilia praised HDS for their impactful initiative. “As Deputy Ombudsman for Human Rights, I am immensely proud of HDS for implementing such a unique and valuable culinary training program for our female prisoners,” she stated. “This program is a crucial step in enhancing the skills of women at Gleno Prison. From a human rights perspective, imprisonment should be about rehabilitation, not just punishment.”

Marilia also emphasized the collaborative efforts among various organizations and institutions. “This year, the HAK Association, PDHJ, HDS, Alfela, Pradet, Bairro-Pite Clinic, JSMP, SHC, the Ministry of Social Solidarity and Inclusion, and  the Ministry of Justice have joined forces in the Prison Service Support Network,” she explained. “This network was created to streamline information sharing and prevent the duplication of programs by NGOs and ministries. We have convened twice this year to address challenges, assess progress, and develop solutions.”

Addressing the 19 women who participated in the training, Deputy Ombudsman encouraged them to utilize their new skills. “You should not feel alone. We, alongside our public institution and civil society partners, are committed to supporting you. We are working together to help you prepare for the next phase of your life after your sentence,” she said.

The closing ceremony took place in the Meeting Room of Gleno Prison and was attended by representatives from the Office of Civil Society Support (GASC), the Director of HDS, the Director of Gleno Prison, and the HAK Association, among others.

The Human Rights Ombudsman for Justice plays a crucial role in overseeing the operation of prisons, ensuring that despite restrictions on their freedom, prisoners are treated with dignity and respect by the state.
