Dí1i, 17 February 2026 —Today, Timor-Leste joins our brothers and sisters of Chinese descent in celebrating the most important festivity of the Chinese calendar: the Chinese New Year, also known as the “Festival of Spring”.
The Chinese community has been part of the history of Timor-Leste for centuries. Their presence and their dedication have contributed to our economic and social development. For this, they deserve our gratitude and recognition.
As Ombudsman for Human Rights and Justice, I recall that our Constitution, in its Article 16 (Universality and Equality) , affirms that all citizens are equal before the law and that no one shall be discriminated against on grounds of, among others, political or ideological conviction, religion, social origin, or cultural background. This fundamental principle reminds us that every community in Timor-Leste, regardless of origin or tradition, deserves equal respect, dignity, and the freedom to celebrate its identity.
The Government’s decision to grant a day of tolerance today reflects this constitutional spirit. It acknowledges that Timor-Leste is a nation built on diversity, mutual respect, and harmony among all its communities.
In a world where differences too often divide, Timor-Leste stands as an example. A nation where a Catholic majority walks in harmony and peace with other minority communities.
Let us take this day to visit one another, to share in the joy of our Chinese brothers and sisters and to reaffirm that our unity is our greatest strength.
To our Chinese community: Happy New Year! May the new year bring you prosperity, health, and happiness.
And to all Timorese: may we always remain a country where every culture is valued, every tradition is respected and every citizen feels at home.
